This is going to sound redundant if you actually do bother to read this stuff. If that is the case, this is not primarily directed at you. In spite of many notices to new users that it is important to read the FAQ, it seems that a large number of people STILL just don't bother. At the very least, to save yourself time and embarassment, read THIS BEFORE you install World Wind. Seriously.

If you have any previous installation of World Wind on your computer, or have had one in the past, PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL 1.3.3 UNTIL you have done the following:

  1. Uninstall all previous versions of World Wind, or at the very least backup all important data!!! We are getting a number of people who have complained of WW overwriting their custom settings/cache, etc. While many Windows applications allow you to keep personalization across multiple versions, you should ALWAYS back up data!!! We cannot be responsible if you neglect this fundamental practice of basic computer usage. Even with XP, it is a good habit to reboot your system after install/uninstall of software, as well.
  2. Delete previous user settings in $WinDrive$:\\Documents and Settings\$username$\Application Data\NASA I personally delete the entire folder. If you fail to do this, and World Wind has a problem, shut WW down, delete that folder, and restart application.

Known issues

This is a list of current issues you may encounter with World Wind 1.3.3. This does not include minor bugs. See World Wind Issues for a comprehensive list of issues.

Black Screen Syndrome

There is a bug in World Wind where, on inital startup, Earth may not show for an extended perion of time. This is caused when WW tries to download terrain information before it has loaded the imagery that they terrain belongs to.

To see if this is what is happening to you, you can press CTRL-H to bring up the download manager. If the dialog fills with red lines, then you've encountered BSS.

Possible solutions are to move around as if the Earth was actually there and this may reset the imagery. Otherwise you can just wait and World Wind will eventually correct itself.

Where (and How) to get Help on 1.3.3

Please be aware that we are often swamped with users asking the same questions that we go over time and time again- while this may seem strange, the vast majority of issues and complaints that we get are already explained very clearly, in the . . . what? Yes, THE FAQ!!!

User Forums

World Wind forums are an important component of the support structure for WorldWind. Following a careful reading of the FAQ, users should vivit the forums and prepare to do some reading. This is the best way to learn about what WW can do, and it allows you to learn at your own pace. Please take advantage of every opportunity to help yourself and others by devoting some time each day (or week) to study the impressive knowledge base collected here and at the Wiki (here)

IRC

WorldWind IRC

Please come visit, but be aware that there is often a lot going on, and this is not generally the appropriate place to receive basic user support. If we have time, and we are not involved in conversations with others, we will most likely take a minute to answer your questions. But if nobody does, please DO NOT WRITE LIKE THIS!!!! We see you, and most likely we already know what you are going to ask (we know, you want to 'Zoom'), and that you had been instructed to do just a teeny bit of homework first. If you insist on asking, you are making it difficult for us to help people who genuinely have a problem which is not of their own negligence. That is not fair to them or to us, so do not be surprised if 'attitudes' are met with indifference on the part of the Support team.

  • Note to advanced users: since IRC is where much of the development discussion occurs, please stop by and give us your input- and feel free to ask questions- we will try our best to answer any questions regarding technical aspects of WorldWind, or the design/development philospohies at work around here. As is expected of any user, please keep discussion relevant to situation, and avoid asking questions which are answered already in FAQs, forums, etc.
