This is from the USGS/USACE index of major dams. Major dams are structures with heights greater than 50 feet or with normal storage capacities greater than 5,000 acre-feet or with a maximum storage capacities greater than 25,000 acre-feet. I broke it up into states because the whole list is about 7700 major dams (trimmed down from the list of 75,000 or so dams that aren't major).

Version 2.0 how has the following information included:

  1. Dam name, year completed, type, and height
  2. River
  3. Primary Purpose
  4. Surface Area
  5. Normal and maximum storage volumes
  6. Owner and type of owner (govt., private, etc.)

Additionally, the icons are colored by hazard level (as described by the database documentation):

  • Red icon (high hazard): A dam where failure or mis-operation will probably cause loss of human life.
  • Orange icon (significant hazard): A dam where failure or mis-operation results in no probable loss of human life but can cause economic loss, environmental damage, disruption of lifeline facilities, or impact other concerns. These dams are often located in predominantly rural or agricultural areas but could be located in areas with population and significant infrastructure.
  • Green icon (low hazard): A dam where failure or mis-operation results in no probable loss of human life and low economic and/or environmental loss. Losses are principally limited to the owner's property.
